Individuals with a background in research, environment, public policy, media and related fields (e.g: water, environment, human rights, public policy, journalism, environmental communication etc.) will be given preference.

Engagement Type & Duration:

This is 2 month internship for students currently enrolled at an Indian university. This is a remote / WFH position, and you will be expected to work during the office hours i.e. 10am to 6pm | Monday to Friday.

Work months: between May, June, July.

About Veditum:

Veditum India Foundation is a not-for-profit research, media, and action oriented organization, working at the intersection of environmental and social justice. Our current work is centered on life in and around Indian rivers. Explore our website to learn more!

About the project:

India Sand Watch (http://sandwatch.in) is an open-data project enabling collection, annotation & archiving of data related to sand mining in India, identifying spatial and temporal trends. The platform also works as a capacity building tool for persons who wish to act towards conservation – through local activism, media action, legal action, research and more.

Role: Data-Collection and Analysis

The role involves deeply understanding the sand mining sector in India, and working with our team along identified intersections of project needs and your skillsets / interests. Based on your learnings and inclinations to then create artefacts (e.g: reports, videos, zines, etc) which communicate these learnings for wider interest / audience.

Process
  1. A week of orientation to learn about river sand mining and India Sand Watch, guided by the Veditum/India Sand Watch team.
  2. Through this first week, finalise your research direction/focus (eg. public policy, environment & climate change, economics, politics, urban planning, journalism etc.) based on a combination of project needs and your skillsets / interests.
  3. You are expected to scour through official, legal, media, and other information related to river sand mining, and archive this data on the India Sand Watch platform. This further familiarises you with the project and builds up towards decided outputs.
  4. Lastly, you will prepare the artefact as described earlier, using the data and research work undertaken during your internship.
  5. Over the course of your internship, you will manage and work with a few of our volunteers to source, upload and present data, and to complete tasks 1-4.
Skills needed:
  • Ability to search for and source relevant data, and explore your chosen research direction / focus.
  • Patience to work with large troves of data and add them to the platform.
  • Ability to work as a team and with volunteers, as well as independently.
  • Ability to understand documents written in English. Additionally, fluency in local language(s) will be an advantage, particularly if focusing on regional data (state, district, river basin).
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills, creativity, and self-motivation to produce the final artefact in your chosen form.

Remuneration:

The remuneration for our interns will be ₹10,000 per month.
