Call for Applications
We are looking for 4 student interns to work with the Veditum team on our environmental accountability project – India Sand Watch – focusing on river sand mining activity across India.
- 3 x Policy Research interns to review sand mining policies & documents from Madhya Pradesh
Individuals with a background in research, environment, public policy, law, media and related fields (e.g: water, environment, human rights, public policy, journalism, environmental communication etc.) will be given preference.
- 1 x Multimedia Intern (with video editing skills)
Individuals with a background/experience in multimedia, visual communication, content creation, video editing and similar fields will be given preference.
Engagement Type & Duration:
These are minimum 2 month internships for students currently enrolled at an Indian university. This is a remote / WFH position, and you will be expected to work during the office hours i.e. 10am to 6pm | Monday to Friday.
Work months: between May, June, July.

About the project:
India Sand Watch (http://sandwatch.in) is an environmental accountability project with an open-data platform at its heart, enabling collection, annotation & archiving of data related to sand mining in India, identifying spatial and temporal trends.
The platform also works as a capacity building tool for persons who wish to act towards conservation – through local activism, media action, legal action, research and more.
Role 1 | Policy Research Internship: Data-Collection and Analysis
The role involves deeply understanding the sand mining sector in India, and working with our team to review selected policy and legal documents from Madhya Pradesh, as well as other relevant data. Based on your learnings and inclinations to then produce a report and supporting collateral which communicates these learnings for wider interest / audience.
Internship Details:
- A week of orientation to learn about river sand mining and India Sand Watch, guided by the Veditum/India Sand Watch team.
- Using your learnings from week one, and support from the ISW team, to review selected sand mining policy documents from Madhya Pradesh.
- Additionally, you will be expected to scour through official, legal, media, and other information related to river sand mining, and archive this data on the India Sand Watch platform. This further familiarises you with the project and builds up towards decided outputs.
- Lastly, you will prepare a report and supporting collateral as described earlier, using the data and research work undertaken during your internship.
Skills needed:
- Ability to search for and source relevant data, and explore your chosen research direction / focus.
- Ability to understand and analyse policy documents
- Patience to work with large troves of data and add them to the platform.
- Ability to work as a team and with volunteers, as well as independently.
- Ability to understand documents written in English. Additionally, fluency in Hindi and local language(s) (Madhya Pradesh) will be an advantage.
- Critical thinking and analytical skills, creativity, and self-motivation to produce the final report.
Role 2 | Multimedia Internship: Video Editing & Content
The role involves working with existing data, images, videos etc. as well as sourcing relevant media to create video outputs for communications & social media, learning and outreach material etc.
Internship details:
- A week of familiarising yourself with river sand mining and India Sand Watch, with the Veditum/India Sand Watch team, and storytelling/narratives/styles in our existing material/content.
- Working with material provided to you (videos, images, data etc) to edit and produce videos/content under the guidance of the ISW team.
- Working with existing content and relevant material sourced by you to create video outputs for communications & social media, learning and outreach material etc.
Skills needed:
- Basic video editing skills
- Ability to source and work with available, relevant material
- Patience to work with large or multiple files
- Ability to work as a team and with volunteers, as well as independently.
- Creativity, ability to take direction, and self-motivation to produce the final output in the requested form.
Remuneration:
The remuneration for our interns will be ₹10,000 per month.
